THE BURNING TIMES Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Innana [6 times] In the cool of the evening They used to gather Neath the stars in the meadow in the meadow Circled bear an old oak tree At the times appointed By the seasons of the earth And the phases of the moon In the centre often stood a woman Equal with the others and respected for her words One of the many we call the witches The healers and the teachers of the wisdom of the earth And the people grew in the knowledge she gave them Herbs to heal their bodies, spells to make their spirits whole Hear them chanting healing incantations Calling forth the wise ones Celebrating in dance and song Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Innana. [5 times] There were those who came to power through domination They were bonded in their worship of a dead man on a cross They sought control of the common people By demanding allegiance to the Church of Rome And the pope declared the inquisition It was a war against the women whose power they feared In the total course of this age of evil nine million European women died And the tale is told of those Who by their hundreds Holding together chose their deaths in the sea While chanting the praises of the mother goddess A refusal of betrayal women were dying to be free Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Innana. Hi Sharon, Thankyou for this, your singing and druming was wonderful last night. It added a great sence of atmosphere to proceedings and the druming realy helped with the meditation and the vigil while waiting for the sun to rise. Blessings Ron. |

Yes, I've heard Christy Moore's version before but I wish I could remember who did the original. I think Tim found out? |

I did, but I can't find my notes. I posted it on the old board. I'll have to have a search about again... ETA: Charlie Murphy wrote the song and performed the original. |

That isn't Charlie Murphy performing it Leslie, if Charlie Murphy was the original. I have a cracked old tape, which Tim put on CD for me. I'd love to get a good copy of it - I think it is much more powerful than the other versions I've heard. |

This is what it says a underneath the vid "Jami Sieber and Charlie Murphy do the vocals. The original version was more ballad like and was on one of Charlie Murphy's solo albums " |

Yeah I saw that so went chasing Charlie Murphy all round the web to try and track him down, still could not find any of his solo work though. As far as I can see he is still alive and kicking and set up the Power of Hope Foundation. Did find a link to him on a site ( http://www.queermusicheritage.us/sep2008cm.html ), it gives a bit of his history. P |

Thanks for that. I'm trying to see if there's a way I can attach the original music file. It's different to the others above, and to my mind, less wimpy and more powerful in its simplicity. |

I'm beginning to think that the version I had was not the original, since Charlie Murphy seems to be American and the chap singing is English. Mmmm, methinks I'll never track it down! |
